October 23, 2020 – Entomologists from the Washington State Department of Agriculture have located the first nest of Asian giant hornets in the US by following a worker caught on a new type of trap and fitted with a radio-tracking device. The nest is in “the cavity of a tree located on private property near an area cleared for a residential home” in Blaine, WA. The nest will be destroyed (likely this Saturday, Oct 24) taking all precautions to minimize escapees, especially the queen. So far the progression of detections as followed expected patterns of occurrence of the different life-stages for this species.
