24 January 2018 – An outbreak of Rift Valley Fever virus is ongoing in Uganda. Rift Valley fever (RVF) is caused by Phlebovirus in the family Bunyaviridae. According to the PubMed moderator (click on the date, above) “…the virus affects different animal species (buffaloes, camels, cattle, goats, and sheep) and can pass to humans either by direct contact through blood or body fluids during slaughter or ingestion of contaminated meat or indirectly through arthropod biting, especially by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes.” Interestingly, Culex pipiens is thought to be the most likely vector in the US.
